Because they're morbidly wrongheaded. 

Why does the Bush administration insist on "staying the course" in Iraq?

It's simple: the radical rightists are not finished committing the crime. And even though they've made a bloody mess of it so far, they're betting that they can still get what they went for and get away with it.

They're not about to throw their golden opportunity away. Their road to perdition was too expensive to construct, including half a century of preparation.

Besides, if they leave now, they won't be able to hide the magnitude of the crime anymore. Not to mention the fact that it will finally, once and for all, put to rest the ludicrous fantasy that Republicans have a clue.

They'll never get another chance to fuck things up in such a big way.
